ROS -- Software overload!

Well before the hardware was completed, students were working on software.  First and foremost was learning ROS well enough to develop and test code.   This proved an enormous challenge as the learning curve was much steeper than was anticipated.  However our students rose to the challenge.  ROS seems like it will be an excellent long term choice but it is going to take more than one or two semesters to develop the in-house expertise necessary to support its adoption...

In addtion to learning how to effectively use the ROS system we strove to develop new algorithms for Image Processing, Local and Global navigation, Mapping, and Obstacle masking.  Individually things were going well, but we had yet to fully integrate the separatly developed modules!
